Until recently, therapy for neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) was nonspecific and limited. Treatment, consisting of efforts to maintain physiological stability and treat seizures with anticonvulsants, was supportive in nature and did not intervene with the basic mechanisms of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. Although relatively uncommon (1-2 cases per 1,000 births), HIE has the potential to be devastating with residual symptoms, including cerebral palsy, developmental retardation, and epilepsy.
